Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to give the students quite an elaborate picture of how tasawwuf emerged into time and space. And that tasawwuf is actually the heart of the Islamic tradition giving it life through its spiritual presence. The presence of tasawwuf in time and space is essential as an element which sustains the Islamic traditional form.
Learning Outcomes The students are supposed to get a comprehensive idea and clear picture of the historical unfolding of tasawwuf. And most importantly, they are suppose to be able to identify the necessity of tasawwuf as an essential element in the history of the Islamic Intellectual tradition.
Course Synopsis (course description)

From the topics of the course, it is obvious that it differentiates between the “history of Islamic Esoterism” and “the history of the mystics”. The latter is only a part of the former. And naturally it will be included in the course but not as a main subject.

It explains the two main distinctive orientations between the Baghdad School and the Khorasan; the former sober while the later intoxicative. And also analyzes the factors that led to these two distinct orientations. The Garden of Truth – Nasr

8 The encounter of Tasawwuf with other traditional sciences;

Part 1: Tasawwuf and ‘Ilm al-Kalam

This topic elaborates the conflicting or complementary relationships between tasawwuf and during the emergence of tasawwuf as theoretical science. It also explains whether tasawwuf is in conflict with ‘ilm al-kalam or with religion itself.
9 The encounter of Tasawwuf with other traditional sciences;

Part II: Tasawwuf and Fiqh

This topic explains the distinction between al-fiqh and the faqih. And also the distinction between al-fiqh and al-shariah. Then identifies the relationship of tasawwuf with the three.
10 The Encounter of Tasawwuf and Rational Sciences:

Tasawwuf and Philosophy

This topic elaborates the distinction between philosophy and doctrinal irfan. The conflicts that occurred among tasawwuf and philosophy (i.e. the peripatetics).
11 Spiritual Art It explains one of the most important and essential appearance of tasawwuf as art in terms of music, literature, and dance and even architecture (visual and audio) -Spirituality and Art – Nasr
