Haidar Bagir got his undergraduate degree from the Dept. of Industrial Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia. He finished his course works at the Graduate Program of the State Institute of Islamic Thought, Jakarta, but received his Master’s degree from the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Harvard University, and Ph D degree from the Department of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia (with one year research in the Dept. of History and Philosophy of Science, Indiana University, Bloomington). He has been the President Director of Mizan Group, one of the biggest publishing houses that he founded in 1982. (Starting 3 years ago, Mizan Group has also produced movies and TV Programs). Among his other professional responsibilities are teaching at the Islamic College for Advanced Studies (ICAS) London in Jakarta , Chairman of the Lazuardi Hayati Foundation for Education, Founder of YASMIN (A foundation for philanthropic works on Community Education and Health), and Chairman of IIMaN Center for the Development of Positive Sufism. He has received several notable research grants from the US institutions, including a Fulbright Grant for Graduate Studies at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Harvard University and a Fulbright Grant for Doctoral Research in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University, as well as CTNS Award for Religion and Science Curriculum Development 2003. A group he chaired has also won a grant from The Metanexus Global Network Initiative (MGNI) Catalyst Grant for the Research on An Exploration to Understand Creativity through A Comprehensive Investigation of Intelligence. He has also taught Islam in the University of Sciences in Philadelphia (Feb – March, 2005) as a visiting scholar within Fulbright’s “Direct Access to the Muslim World” program and served as the Misher Professor of Humanities in the same year. He wrote numerous papers and articles on various topics – especially in the fields of (Islamic) Philosophy, Mysticism, and Thought -- and authored 8 (eight) books, including Deciphering Mystical Experience : A Comparison between Mulla Sadra and Heidegger (2007), Islamic Political Philosophy : between Alfarabi and Ayatullah Khomeini (2004), Pocket Book of Islamic Philosophy (2005), Pocket Book of Tasawuf (Islamic Mysticism) (2005), Al-Farabi (2005)), The New Era of Ethical Management (1994), and co-authored Revelation of Secrets : A Sufi Hermeneutics (forhcoming). He is also involved in several international organizations, including Globethics.net (Advisor, Indonesia), International Society of Islamic Philosophy (ISIP, regional coordinator for Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand), and Indonesia-America People to People Dialogue (IAP2P (founding-member of the Board of Trustee). Apart from being awarded with three Fulbright grants, his name has also been included in the list of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World 2009 and 2010 editions issued by the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University and the The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center in Amman, Jordania.
